So your thinking about getting your own website or domain?
Let me explain the IN's and Outs to you.
A domain website is one you have registered with Internic (paid their fee of $70.00) If your creative enough to have a product or service that you can get the "brand name" (sony.com ect.) that people would put in the URL address (brand name recognition.) as long as you are not stealing someone trade mark, search engines are how you are found on the internet or by word of mouth, business card or flyer. More on this later.
Choose a domain name that is catchy and or a house hold name. (something that you would put into a search engine to find what you are looking for.) It brings people to your site! Traffic to your site is very important! I will personally or you can check to see if your domain name is available here on my site. Your domain name registration costs $70.00 from Internic. They are in charge of names. The $70.00 goes to them and is for 2 years registration then it's 35.00 a year after that.
Time to choose a host, a host is a
company that has a constant link to the internet and sells room (IP addresses) on their
servers for a monthly fee. The fees vary depending on what you want your site to be able
to do. Most sites come with 20 megs or so of space (this is where your pages
go) we give 250 megs of space. Then
there is the amount of file transfer per month 78 percent of the sites out there don't
exceed this so don't worry that charge probably won't ever apply to you and it is minimal
anyway we don't charge for it. Most Sites comes with 10 autoreponders, (ours
comes with 100 + 100 pop 3 emails, ftp access, mail forwarding
(any
name @yourdomain.com) will come to you with out the sender knowing it, we
have a great Personal Control Panel (PCP) that
you can access from www to check on and administer your email, auto
responders, pages ect. site. I use FrontPage to
administer my websites but you don't have to (I don't charge extra for that).
Your site is password protected so the files won't be tampered with. Extras are sound,
e-commerce enabled, shopping carts and ssl (secured socket layer) for secure transactions.
Most Host's and I have a 50.00 setup charge and quarterly or yearly payments that you can make to
them, my example ie: setup and quarterly fee would be 50.00 + 89.95 =
$139.95 to get you
setup on my servers. (includes first three months of lease of IP address) I
can bill you
quarterly (29.95 a month) $89.95 on this plan or
yearly at $311.40 (25.95 a month)
You now have a site, there is nothing on it and no one knows it is there not even the search engines! They need to know to be able to send to you people who have put the word, words or phrases they are looking for in there search. More on this in search engines.
Now you need me to be your webmaster or do it yourself. A webmaster puts your site up on the internet for all to see. He also keeps it running, as with all computers there are problems from time to time so it is very important to have someone watching your site (this takes both of us). For my designing your WebPages (pages are defined as 25 seconds or less load time from a 28,8 modem.) plus $25.00 a month maintenance and lite changes. special for your domain name site $750.00 for 8 pages indexing your site in the search engines every couple of months * plus 25.00 a month maintenance and lite changes. Please note not all webmaster do what I do for the price I get (I'm cheaper in most cases and for sure cheaper in the long run). a vast majority of webmasters will put them up cheap and charge high for Maintaining them and any changes are at a fee. My charges are rolled into one and as long as it is not a total change of a page it's included. Web pages are a work in progress and are really never done. Please keep this in mind when shopping around "how much for changes". Yes there are discounts if you pay yearly.
From my stand point, good add copy sells a site. I can clean up or put exactly what you want on a page. Leave them wanting more and give away some of your thoughts ect... but not the whole pie! Or it might be just a straight sale of a product. Pictures are great but take time to load and cost $25.00 for me to scan in or to take picture's of your products with a digital camera. If you have them in digital form it is $10.00 to take what you have and adapt it or fit them to the page. Certain files (JPEG, GIF,) load faster than some (bitmaps or other files). Time is very important factor!!!
People have a short attention span and yes that was a screaming statement! If it takes to long to load a page they are gone. If you keep it short and to the point more will see it. The more that see your page in total (people leave before the page finishes) the better chance for sales. I have ways to get the content there with the pictures (2) and animation in less time than a lot of pages you see on the internet today. It pays to stay on top of technology.
*Search engines are programs that go out onto the maze we call the internet and look at all the indexed sites (sites that were indexed with them) to bring back to you hopefully what you were looking for. Most search engines update once every 2 weeks to 6 weeks. If you submit to them to much they dump your listing, they change how they list there order in preference (key elements found on all pages). I am lucky enough to have come across some of the key elements they can't change so my people stay in the top of the search engines longer (they still dump you and you have to re-index all over again. By the way this page takes 17 seconds to load.
